On The Cover

Alexandria Lomuntad, a freshman Graphic Design student at the International Academy of Design and Technology- Seattle, created this issue’s cover. The concept for the cover illustration was to use technology to recreate an original character drawing in a visually exciting environment, with detailed usage of design elements such as vivid contrast, values, and movement.

The cover was painted entirely with a Japanese program called OpenCanvas using two brushes: a thick brush, similar to the default hard round brush in Photoshop, and the airbrush. Alexandria wanted to illustrate a cover that didn’t have a detailed negative space, like most of her artwork, yet wanted it to be just as visually appealing and compositionally successful.

She began experimenting with the canvas, color and various patterns and textures and the creative juices started flowing. Diligently working and taking breaks in between, she completed this illustration in two and a half hours, while some can take up to five hours to complete.

Alexandria graduated High School in 2010 and is looking forward to completing her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at IADT– Seattle in 2013 with hopes of getting more of her work published worldwide. In her free time, she enjoys drawing, playing piano and spending time with friends. She’s been drawing since Middle School and it has become one of her biggest passions in life. She continues to work her hardest to do well in school and keeps improving on her projects and artwork.
